Description: XYLITOL, NF is a naturally occurring 5-carbon sugar alcohol found in many fruits and vegetables. Xylitol is used as nutritive sweetener as a sugar substitute to produce “sugar-free” foods and is commonly used in the production of chewing gums, mints and other candies. It is healthier than sugar (75% fewer carbohydrates and 40% fewer calories) and just as sweet. Is often used in tooth care products and has proven to be healthier for teeth than sugar. Although its main use is as a food additive, it is also used medicinally to prevent middle ear infections in young children. The NF grade indicates it is graded suitable for personal care, cosmetic and pharmaceutical applications. All Spectrum Chemical NF grade products are manufactured, packaged and stored under current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP) per 21CFR part 211 in FDA registered and inspected facilities.

Description: The NMDA receptor (NMDAR) plays an essential role in memory, neuronal development and it has also been implicated in several disorders of the central nervous system including Alzheimer’s, epilepsy and ischemic neuronal cell death (Grosshans et al., 2002; Wenthold et al., 2003; Carroll and Zukin, 2002). The NMDA receptor is also one of the principal molecular targets for alcohol in the CNS (Lovinger et al., 1989; Alvestad et al., 2003; Snell et al., 1996). The NMDAR is also potentiated by protein phosphorylation (Lu et al., 1999). The rat NMDAR1 (NR1) was the first subunit of the NMDAR to be cloned. The NR1 protein can form NMDA activated channels when expressed in Xenopus oocytes but the currents in such channels are much smaller than those seen in situ. Channels with more physiological characteristics are produced when the NR1 subunit is combined with one or more of the NMDAR2 (NR2 A-D) subunits.

Description: Sequestosome 1 is an adapter protein which binds ubiquitin and may regulate the activation of NFKB1 by TNF-alpha, nerve growth factor and interleukin-1. It may regulate signaling cascades through ubiquitination and may also be involved in cell differentiation, apoptosis, immune response and regulation of K(+) channels. It is present as a homooligomer or heterooligomer and localises to the cytoplasm, late endosome and nucleus. In cardiac muscles it localises to the sarcomeric band. It accumulates in neurofibrillary tangles and in Lewy bodies of neurons from individuals with Alzheimer and Parkinson disease respectively. It is also enriched in Rosenthal fibers of pilocytic astrocytoma and in liver cells it accumulates in Mallory bodies associated with alcoholic hepatitis, Wilson disease, indian childhood cirrhosis and in hyaline bodies associated with hepatocellular carcinoma. Sequestosome 1 is ubiquitously expressed and to date, there are 2 named isoforms produced by alternative splicing. Defects in sequestosome 1 cause sporadic and familial Page disease of bone (PDB). This is a metabolic bone disease characterised by focal areas of increased and disorganised bone turn-over due to activated osteoclasts.

Description: Fetuin B is thought to have functions in female fertility, metabolism, and liver disease. A protease inhibitor belonging to the fetuin family of proteins, within the cystatin superfamily, fetuin b’s structure includes two cystatin domains (CY1 and CY2) connected by a linker, with a CPDCP-trunk and a C-terminal region (CTR) (Cuppari et al.). This plasma protein originates in the liver (Denecke et al.) and acts to inhibit the activity of ovastacin, a metalloprotease that causes the zona pellucida to harden, leading to female infertility (Karmilin et al.). Fetuin B has also been reported to increase apoptosis, and inhibit migration and invasion of prostate cancer cells, in in vitro and in vivo settings (Zhan et al.). Elevated serum fetuin B has been linked to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) (Zhu et al.). This protein contains a His-residue tag at the carboxyl end of the polypeptide chain. For consistency and reproducibility across your applications, apolipoprotein H from STEMCELL comes lyophilized with ≥ 92% purity, and is verified by LAL analysis to ensure endotoxin levels are ≤1.0 EU/μg protein.

Analytical Standards for Wine

Wine is a complex combination of water, alcohol and other substances such as organic acids, phenols, sugars, carbon dioxide, and sulfur dioxide. The chemical interactions of these compounds, combined with the aging process, determine the quality of the color, taste and aroma of the wine. However, during this process, the chemical interactions can also play key roles in spoiling the wine. For instance, cork taint transpires when naturally occurring airborne fungi are in the presence of chlorophenol compounds to form 2,4,6-trichloranisole (TCA) in the wine. When this occurs, the wine’s aroma is reduced significantly and is replaced by an undesirable smell and taste.

To help regulate the spoilage of wine, the wine industry tests for several compounds that are known to cause this. For this industry, SPEX CertiPrep offers Certified Reference Materials (CRMs) for wine that are designed for GC, GC/MS, HPLC and LC/MS analysis. These standards are manufactured from the highest purity starting materials and the highest grade of solvents available in order to guarantee superior quality. Each standard is supplied with a detailed comprehensive Certificate of Analysis.

Description: P62, also known as Sequestosome I, is a 62kDa, 440 amino acid protein, initially identified as a ligand of the SH2 domain of p56lck, now known to be expressed in many tissues. In addition to TRAF6, PEST and zinc finger motifs, p62 has a C-terminal ubiquitin binding association (UBA) domain with an affinity for multi-ubiquitin chains, and it is considered to serve as a scaffold protein, capable of binding to multiple signalling molecules and uniting receptor-mediated signalling events with ubiquitinylation. Elevated levels of p62 have been reported in breast tumours and in alcoholic liver disease where p62 has been shown to be involved in the formation of Mallory bodies. Several mutations in the p62 UBA domain have been identified and the etiology of Paget’s disease of bone has been linked to one such mutation. Kuusisto and colleagues have demonstrated that p62 is also present in elevated levels in the hallmark inclusions found in various neurodegenerative conditions, including tauopathies (Alzheimer’s disease, Picks disease, and frontotemporal dementia) and synucleinopathies (Parkinson’s disease, dementia with Lewy body disease and multiple system atrophy). In recent years ubiquitin immunostaining has been used to provide adjunct information for neuropathological diagnosis, but it is becoming evident that p62 may be an even more reliable marker of neurodegenerative disease inclusion detection than tau, alpha-synuclein or ubiquitin immunostaining.
