Unstable intermediate in the biosynthesis of LTB₄ and LTC₄. The naturally occuring free acid is a substrate for LTA₄ hydrolase and LTC₄ synthase and plays a central role in transcellular leukotrieneand lipoxin biosynthesis. Mobilises Ca²⁺ in human neutrophils. Supplied as the methyl ester for greater stability.
