Educational Materials Biology Educational Materials PCR Learning Activities
This activity works in conjunction with AP Biology classes.

  • Students Test for Genetic Engineering
  • Time Required: 75 Minutes plus Two Hours for PCR
  • Activity in Conjunction with AP Biology
  • Application: Extracting DNA from Food or Plants

Some foods contain raw materials from genetically modified organisms (GMO). In this experiment, students extract DNA from food or plant material and perform PCR to determine if any GMO indicator genes are present.

Amplified DNA is separated and sized by agarose gel electrophoresis.
