Hemolysis, the rupture of red blood cells, is induced by certain species of streptococcal bacteria that produce extracellular hemolysin. Observe this phenomenon with this set of 3 non-pathogenic species
- Biosafety Level: 1
- Canada: Containment Level 2 - PHAC Licence required
- Easily observe all 3 types of hemolysis
When this set of 3 bacteria are cultivated on blood agar, a zone of hemolysis (a cleared area) develops around the bacteria: in alpha hemolysis, colonies are surrounded by zones of incomplete lysis, with a green or brownish green zone; in beta hemolysis, the zone is clear; in gamma hemolysis, there is no hemolytic zone.
Organisms included: Streptococcus mutans (alpha hemolysis), Streptococcus sp. (beta hemolysis), Streptococcus salivarius (gamma hemolysis)
Freeze-dried organisms come with everything you need to rehydrate and culture the organism when you're ready.
Ordering information: Microbial and fungal cultures are restricted and can only be ordered by educational professionals.
