Lugol's iodine solution stabilized for Gram staining, Sigma-Aldrich®
Supplier: MilliporeSigma
Stabilization:
Stabilised with polyvinylpyrrolidon (PVP)
M-Clarity™ quality level = MQ300
Lugol’s solution stabilized with PVP is used in bacteriology, for example, for the staining of Gram bacteria.
It contains a complex of Iodine-Polyvinylpyrrolidon (PVP) and no free iodine, which stabilizes the solution and reduces the evaporation of iodine. During Gram-staining, the iodine from the Lugol’s solution and crystal violet form a stable complex that will not be released by decolorisation. Thus, Gram-positive bacteria will appear dark blue when analyzed microscopically, wheras Gram-negative bacteria can be counterstained e.g. orange with safranin. The Lugol’s solution is registered and quality controlled as IVD / CE product and can be used in diagnostics. 1 L of the Lugol's solution stabilized with PVP is capable of staining up to 500 slides.
